Horn bollard from Pasir Panjang container terminal, Kapur leaf, plastic bottles from snake farm (Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute)
Installation view at Singapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark
Singapore Biennale 2025 Commission / PURE INTENTION curated by Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap
Dispersed throughout the museum, /s/ gathers three elements that sit between utility and trace. At the gallery entrance, a marine bollard temporarily withdrawn from its berth, arrives on loan and "stretches" onto the gallery floor, a mooring point unmoored. Nearby, a group of flattened plastic bottles sourced from the snake farm at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute in Bangkok recall their prior task: housing rescued snakes. The small breathing cuts in the bottles become a collapse point; as the bottles compress, residual air and moisture meet the room. Outside, a spear-like tip of a kapur leaf pierces the wall. In place of camphor crystals that turn from solid to vapour, the gesture rests on the leaf’s point to figure sublimation as release into the space without trace.
Across these parts, the artist works with contrasts: land and sea, enclosure and exposure. Each element both holds and releases, inviting attention to small changes in the environment.
